I have really enjoyed building my own coils for my Kay-fun rebuildable vape tanks. It’s not too hard but is for advanced users.
I have a short list of what you will need to get started:
-Spool of Kanthal annealed round wire. Gauge varies. I’m using 28 gauge right now.
-A 3/32″ drill bit or equivalent round pin.
-A ohm meter is handy to check the ohms of your coil.
-A small wire clipper.
-A small plier.
-A mini screwdriver set with both phillips and flat type tips.
-Wicking of your choice. I prefer organic cotton balls. Available at your local drug store.
Basic steps to build your coil.
Start with a decent length of kanthal wire. Maybe 4 to 6 inch piece depending on how many wraps you intend to make the coil. I like mine a bit long so there is extra to hold on to on each end of the coil.
There are good coil building calculators on google play you can download to figure out your desired ohms and how many wraps needed to make the coil. Most are free to download.
For example. Using my Vamo v5 power source. Which requires coils 1.2 ohms and higher in order to fire. I use the calculator and see I need at least 5-6 wraps of 28 gauge kanthal in order get a coil with ohms at about 1.6-1.8.
That’s using the 3/32″ diameter pin to make my wraps. Each power device will vary on coil ohms required to activate or fire the coil.
Begin wrapping the kanthal wire around the pin or drill bit. Leave a bit extra on each end at the start of your coil and at the end. Wrap it tightly around the pin the desired amount of wraps. You want the ends to face downward and oppose each other in opposite directions.
Then attach your coil to the posts using the provided screws. One end to the positive side and one end to the negative side.
You want the coil centered above the air hole in the middle of the base.
Once attached test fire the coil. Once it heats up. Take a small plier and gently squeeze the coil together to tighten it up. Do this a couple times. Make certain there is no wicking material in the coil while you do this!
Once everything looks good and is working. Add your wicking material. Pull a section of organic cotton through the center of the coil and clip it to length so the cotton just rests on the base above the e juice holes. Do not block the holes or no e liquid will come through to moisten your wick.
Then add some e juice to your wick and coil. Install your chimney and test fire again to make sure it fires.
Finally install all remaining components and fill with favorite flavor e liquid.
You are now ready to vape with organic cotton and with a coil you built. The flavor and performance is amazing!
